A question I am often asked: Is treadmill running better than outdoor running? Of course, when one lives in Wisconsin, it is nearly impossible to run outside every day. As a result of research on this topic and through personal experience, I believe both are very effective. The enjoyment of unpredictability from running outside seems to always give me a “runner’s high.” I love it when something unexpected happens, for example, when a passerby gives you a high five. Running outdoors keeps me motivated as I am distracted by the ever changing scenery, fresh air, and the weather. On the flip side, I also enjoy running on the treadmill as I am able to work on my form, while changing up my pace. On the treadmill, one is less likely to sustain an injury because it’s more predictable. While every individual will have various reasons for choosing one over the other, the most important consideration is the desire to do it and repeat it! I would also encourage adding cross training (biking, swimming, elliptical, etc.) to your regimen as it will balance out your muscle groups as well as help prevent injury.
